Managing Time for Difficult Tasks

Let’s face it, managing time is hard enough. However, it becomes even tougher when one is faced with performing a difficult or unpleasant task.  Whether it's a complex project, a difficult conversation with a colleague, or a daunting deadline, these tasks can often leave us feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Putting off these tasks can make it even more stressful.

How can you motivate yourself? Here are a few tips:

  • Connect it to your own goals. Instead of thinking that a task must be done for some external reason like a deadline or fear of reprisal, connect it to your own career goals. For example, finish a project because it is a step toward your goal of moving ahead in the company. Or, deliver the bad news to a boss because you’ll get the chance of presenting your perspective on a situation.
     
  • Set a clear and realistic timeline. Before starting a difficult task, take the time to break it down into smaller, manageable steps. This will help you stay focused and motivated as you work towards completing the task. Additionally, setting specific deadlines for each step helps ensure that you are making progress towards your end goal.
     
  • Prioritze. It's important to consider both the urgency and importance of each task. Giving priority to these tasks will have the biggest impact on your career. It's also helpful to identify tasks that you can delegate or outsource to others, allowing you to free up time for more challenging tasks.
     
  • Implement effective time management techniques. One common technique is the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working in short, focused bursts of time followed by short breaks. This can help improve focus and productivity, making it easier to tackle difficult tasks. Additionally, creating a daily schedule or to-do list can help you stay organized and prioritize your tasks effectively.
     
  • Take care of yourself. Make sure to schedule regular breaks and take time to rest and recharge. Engaging in activities that help you relax and reduce stress, such as exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones, can help you stay motivated and focused as you work towards completing difficult tasks.
